Patching And Repair

Does Your Asphalt Need Patching And Repair?

If your asphalt is showing signs of wear, such as potholes, depressions, and cracks, your asphalt probably needs to be repaired.

If you decide not to repair your asphalt, water could get into the cracks and further separate and damage your paving. It could become unsafe to drive on and damage your car. It could also damage the ground under and surrounding the pavement.

Why Did Your Asphalt Crack?

There are a number of reasons your asphalt crack, such as old mix when originally laid or just simply years of wear and tear.

Slippage Cracks: These cracks are called slippage cracks because they look like the asphalt is slipping from the sub-layer paving. Often, they appear as wrinkles or gaps in the paving. These occur when the asphalt does not adhere to the sub-layer paving correctly.

Reflection Cracks: These cracks are straight and possibly in a grid. They are called reflection cracks because they are a reflection of deeper cracks in the sub-layers.

Linear And Traverse Cracks: This type of cracking often appears in large areas of paving, where two or more sections are combined. If there are large temperature changes, high amounts of water, or incorrect application of the asphalt, this cracking may appear.

Block Cracks: Are there small circular or square cracks in your pavement? This is a sign that your paver may have used old mix to lay the asphalt originally.

Edge Cracks: These cracks usually run alongside the edge of the road in the direction of the road. They are caused by heavy vegetation on the side of the road, shifting materials underneath the asphalt, or heavy traffic.

Fatigue Cracks: This type of cracking looks like alligator skin - a series of cracks in a scale-like pattern on the asphalt. This signifies that too many large loads used the pavement or there was a flaw in the original application design or poor drainage.

Your asphalt might also depressions, rutting, potholes, corrugations, patch failures, weathering, and more.
